Critic Reviews

Ultimately A Hat in Time is a quirky platformer featuring a stellar cast of characters, unique levels that are fun to explore and balanced gameplay. However, the Nintendo Switch version has an inconsistent frame rate, a poor camera system and long load times which put it behind other versions.

Taking into account the stuttering, low resolution textures, and downgraded 3D models, this is still an incredible game. When I started playing, the game was a bit harder to look at, but as I continued and got back into the flow of its platforming I stopped caring about the visuals. While the glitches are still bothersome, it's a testament to just how good A Hat in Time is that I still adored the game in this compromised state.

I find myself saying this a lot, but in this case it's the absolute truth - A Hat in Time is a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch. Despite some glaring technical problems, A Hat in Time plays, feels, and sounds exactly like any other beloved classic 3D platfomer, but introduces enough new ideas to truly stand up on its own two feet. It's one of the most memorable games I've played all year, and I already want more of it.

A Hat in Time may not revolutionize 3D platforming but that doesn't stand in its way of this being a fun game which fans of the style will undoubtedly enjoy. Despite technical issues which can harm the experience to a certain extent, this is an overall well designed work and which is well worth the time and effort that players put into it.

A Hat in Time is a hugely enjoyable take on the classic 3D platformer. The tight, familiar controls and varied, innovative levels result in one of the most fascinating and entertaining games out there. The issues with performance and the camera do little to wipe the smile from our faces while playing through this; if you adore the likes of Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie, then you'll fall utterly in love with A Hat in Time.
