The Bookwalker is a narrative adventure where you play as Etienne Quist, a writer-turned-thief with the ability to dive into books. Use your powers to traverse reality and book worlds, and track and retrieve famous items like Thor's Hammer and the Excalibur in exchange for your creative freedom.
About the story
Dive into vastly different worlds As a bookwalker, you possess the unique ability to dive into worlds of books as if they were dreams. However, they are not as immaterial as mere fantasies. Bookwalkers can also bring valuable items from a book into the real world, and that is precisely what your job is Hunt for powerful artifacts Travel between worlds of books in search of legendary items of great power. Even though they are not as powerful in your world, you can still find buyers on the black market. Meet dozens of characters and learn their stories Visit mysterious castle dungeons, a drifting spaceship, a desert city among deadly sandstorms, and much more. Meet the inhabitants of those places and use them to reach your goal. After all, they are not really alive...or are they? Find solutions to a plethora of puzzles, some quite… unorthodox Some problems will make you think outside the box, and some will require you to travel outside of this world. If you are stuck, just wake up at your apartment. You may find something handy there that you can take with you on your journey. Everything from the strange but rich narrative to the characters comes together to give us something close to a masterpiece. The only downside is the minor issue that appears when trying to interact with certain objects. However, even with that tiny flaw, The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales is a must-play because of its unique take on the genres it embodies.

Switching between the two worlds is exciting and reasonably necessary for solving the puzzles, even if sometimes you won't understand what's happening. The solid and emotional story, which you do not so much influence, is unfortunately slightly disturbed by the audio, which is weak here. Still, it manages to stand on its own with its feet firmly on the ground, ensuring that you will question your morals.

As a narrative explicitly about the creation and exploitation of stories, it naturally has a lot of pressure on it to say something. But it doesn’t, beyond a milquetoast message of “be nice to people.” I could look past that if it wasn’t for the creative setting or if the gameplay was better. But as it is, it all seems hollow. Despite all this, I still really like The Bookwalker. It may not live up to its potential, but it’s a fascinating concept executed competently. The puzzles are good, even if the RPG and crafting systems seem like little more than an afterthought. The story is sufficient to pull you through, even if it doesn’t have much to say.
