G.I. Joe Wrath of Cobra delivers a neat nostalgia trip for beat em' up lovers, but fails to provide anything worthwhile for the mainstream audience. It falls behind other old-school competitors in the genre due to its poor enemy and stage variety, but is solid fun for a popcorn game with some friends.

G.I. Joe: Wrath of Cobra is a total and complete waste of a classic license. Avoid the unrelenting pull of the nostalgia tractor beam and give this one a miss.

G.I. Joe: Wrath of Cobra is definitely a functional beat'em up and, for a while, quite fun, even though it's extremely generic. Appropriating all the main conventions of the genre, however, it is mediocre in working its laughable story poorly, it is tiring and repetitive especially playing in single-player and unfortunately it makes little use of the base of the franchise that lends it the title.

Whether it was the boss design, the life count, or a handful of glitches, I kept hitting roadblocks during my playthrough. As much as I might enjoy certain characters or gameplay elements, I still struggled with this one. I had fun slogging my way to the last stage, sure. But the thought of playing enough to unlock everything fills me with terrible dread. G.I. Joe: Wrath of Cobra might be for franchise fans more than anyone interested in another beat ’em up.

A classic beat 'em up lacking any particular flare of originality, but enjoyable to play and quite rich in content. The combat system is simple but sufficiently articulated to make the fights varied and appropriately challenging. What is missing for now is an online co-op mode, promised in future updates by the development team, and some intervention is urgently needed to correct a few technical issues.
