Freedom Planet is a combat-based platform adventure that pits a spunky dragon girl and her friends against an alien attack force. There's trouble around every turn, from insects to giant robots to sheer explosive destruction, but you'll have a variety of special fighting abilities to blast your way through each stage. As Lilac, you can use Dragon powers to whip enemies with your hair, spin like a cyclone, or fly through the air at high speed like a comet. As Carol, you can bust through foes with a flurry of punches and kicks or summon motorcycles that let you ride up walls and ceilings.

Freedom Planet is full of retro charm but isn’t held back by it, instead pushing forward with new ideas to stand on its own two legs. The eShop is full of winning software, but don’t let this one slip by under your nose!

Worth Playing

Four years after its initial Steam release, Freedom Planet still stands as a good modern interpretation of the classic platforming formula. The multiple characters play differently enough that it's worthwhile to replay the game to see the different pathways and use different strategies to beat bosses. The two main modes do a good job of pleasing players who value narrative and those who prefer action, and the nice presentation solidifies Freedom Planet as a good choice for platforming fans.

Freedom Planet is the Sonic game that never was. It started as a Sonic fan game before becoming an original intellectual property, and yet, at the end of the day, I would vouch that this is the best Sonic game to come out prior to Sonic Mania. As a result, given the different story paths, the fast-paced action, and the number of stages, Freedom Planet is one of my favorite indie games. It doesn’t feel cheap, it doesn’t feel dated, and it plays extremely well. While it’s not a groundbreaking title, it serves as a love letter for players who enjoy side-scrollers. I recommend it for any system it’s available on, such as PC or Nintendo Switch. Be sure to look out for the sequel when it comes out!

Freedom Planet is a fun action platformer that is a blast to play on Nintendo Switch. I finished my first run with the game in around 3 hours and change, and was definitely ready to do it all over again with another character since they each play very differently. Be sure to check this one out!
