Ninja Gaiden 4 (2025)

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black offers a comprehensive remake of Team Ninja's finest game, rendered in beautiful modern visuals. Combat is as bombastically brilliant as it ever was, though the awful camera will put off many of those new to the game, it really hasn't aged well. Still, as a reminder of how good Ninja Gaiden can be, this remake offers a tantalising taste of what we can all look forward to when Ninja Gaiden 4 is released later this year.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is an unmissable title for fans of the genre and those seeking a true challenge in gaming. It modernizes the classic while staying true to its brutal action. It remains one of the best hack-and-slash experiences ever made, delivering relentless difficulty and rewarding mastery that few modern games can match.

The game still plays great for me, even after all this time. Combos take some getting used to. And learning to defend better is something you should learn very early on. There are times I feel that the game is tedious rather than challenging. One example is the Water Dragon (that is its name). But I’ve always remembered dreading that fight, anyway. I was a little disappointed that they had removed two bosses from this version. One is the giant Buddha on the first level and the Statue of Liberty. There were two fights I loved in NINJA GAIDEN 2 Sigma. And with all that said, if you’ve played it before, you won’t be disappointed. If this is your first entry into the franchise before 4 drops, then all I can say is if you like challenge, enjoy. If not, play on a lower difficulty and have fun. I was gonna be petty and give it the Gold Award for removing the fights mentioned above. But I just couldn’t. So instead I’m awarding NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black, the well-deserved Platinum Award.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black reminds us of our younger years, essentially playing through a cheesy action movie with over-the-top violence, cool looking vistas, and a ridiculous story. In parts, it’s fun to play something you can just enjoy for what it is, without the need to delve into overly deep combat systems.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black delivered an exciting combat experience with a unique style, featuring improved artistic direction and well-balanced sound design that makes it one of the best enhancements we’ve seen. Despite facing a few issues, it still stands as one of the top action experiences.
