Critic Reviews

Kitsune Tails is a fun 2D platformer with a number of levels that will get your blood under your nails. The graphics and soundtrack take you back in time when everything was simpler and, above all, happier. If you don't feel like dealing with all kinds of complex systems or if you want a glimpse into what games used to be like, then this is not a bad game to try.

Obviously, the big draw in Kitsune Tails isn’t meant to be the gameplay – you don’t make the focus of your game a lesbian love triangle between two mythical creatures and a sorceress if you aren’t hoping to draw in fans who want a meaty narrative at the core of their games. But while that may be fine for a visual novel, if you’re trying to sell a 2D platformer you need good gameplay too. And even if Kitsune Tails borrows liberally from one of the best of those ever made, it doesn’t come anywhere close to living up to its inspiration.

More than a simple clone, Kitsune Tails manages to bring good ideas to the traditional platformer genre. The easily recognizable gameplay is used to offer a good dose of variety and challenge, including creative bosses, very beautiful areas and an interesting story. Though it may have missed on more impactful qualities, it's a gun game for your library and a must for fans of classic 2D games.

Kitsune Tails is a really fun and varied 2D platformer, and for fans of the classics it'll provide a hell of a hit of sweet nostalgia.

Kitsune Tails is trying to refine, rather than reinvent the wheel, and offers a short but sweet platforming adventure alongside a story of love and friendship.
