Stray is a curious, futuristic tale that's full of striking set pieces and the neon glow of a post-human world. Bar an odd decision to remove shadows, the Nintendo Switch 2 is a striking upgrade in texture and consistent framerates. Free for those who own the original Nintendo Switch edition, too. Is it good fun taking on the paws of a curious cat? A resounding yes. Is it fun evading a constant army of unrelenting bugs? No. That said, Stray is a compact, charming tale that is worth a go for feline lovers and cyberpunk aficionados.

Stray pounces onto Switch 2 with a visually stunning presentation that successfully mimics its high-end console counterparts, offering rich lighting and crisp upscaled resolutions. While the absence of a 60 FPS performance mode and minor upscaling artifacts hold it back technically, the game's atmospheric cyberpunk world-building and charming feline authenticity remain fully intact.

With its beautiful atmosphere, emotional story and unique perspective of a cat, Stray still remains one of the most special indie games in recent years. While the port falls short of delivering 60 FPS and makes limited use of features such as mouse controls, the overall experience remains highly enjoyable. More of a relaxing “cat walking simulator” than a challenging or highly replayable game, Stray stands out thanks to its engaging narrative, memorable soundtrack, and distinctive charm, making it an easy recommendation for players looking for a linear, immersive, and laid-back adventure.

Having come from playing Stray on the PlayStation 5, you can tell that the Switch version tests the system’s limits from time to time. If you don’t mind the visual and performance downgrade, playing on the Switch is fine. Though I would wholeheartedly recommend playing on another platform to get a deeper experience of what the game has to offer graphically. Regardless of the platform you play on, Stray is the cat’s meow, and something I feel everyone should experience playing at least once.
