In a very competitive niche market Sonic Wings REUNION fails to bring anything substantially different to the table. It offers a wide range of characters and the option to mix and match special attacks, but overall it plays like a Psikyo shooter with lesser challenge and similar visual presentation. On the other hand it is more accessible than much of the competition, which makes Sonic Wings REUNION a suitable entry point for players new to the shmup genre.

I had some fun with the characterful SONIC WINGS REUNION but it definitely doesn't live up to its iconic 2D shoot 'em up predecessors.

Sonic Wings Reunion, while being a silly little side-stop in my gaming, is not something that is setting the world on fire. For the fanbase of this series, I am certain that I am probably making someone mad over there. But the game…just doesn’t lend itself to being anything beyond an arcade game. If you have been following this series since it began in the early 1990’s, maybe it’s worth picking up. But if you find yourself a newbie to Sonic Wings world, you may not see what the fuss is about and might opt to spend your hard-earned money elsewhere. And I wouldn’t blame you.

Sonic Wings Reunion focused on reviving a past star, but without capitalizing on its glory or bringing anything new. Not even nostalgia can be a draw, given that many other franchises, such as Gradius, Darius, and X-Out, have dedicated themselves to releasing collections or remastering their main titles, adding achievements and memorabilia. The Aero Fighters' flight deserved more attention.

Reunion brings the Sonic Wings spirit back with speed and purpose: snappy controls, punchy boss fights, and a nice roster of pilots and wingmen to choose from.
