Long-lost family secrets. Hints of a hidden fortune. And miles to go before they sleep. Tess Devine’s relationship with her mom has never been easy, but they’re about to set out together on a journey into the past that they’ll never forget.

About the story

One fine fall day, Tess Devine and her mother Opal discover a cache of old notes and letters carefully stashed away in the attic of their house. Hints of deep-rooted family secrets, decades-old burglaries, a lost treasure somewhere near the Canadian border... What they uncover suggests a mystery that's best left well enough alone. But that’s not going to happen. In Open Roads, Tess and Opal embark on a road trip adventure to explore a series of long-abandoned family properties, unearthing the past. They’ll search the ruins of these places that hold buried memories, things Opal has tried for years to forget. And in this search, they'll discover not just the truth they've been seeking, but each other.

Open Roads is a first-person adventure game that focuses on the mother-daughter relationship and uses dialogue as its primary narrative tool, in addition to the classic environmental exploration typical of the genre. Overall, it is a very intimate and enjoyable experience that actually feels like a family road trip, but it ends up being too ephemeral to make an impression, due to a somewhat abrupt unraveling of the mystery that serves as the narrative pretext for the adventure, and a series of stylistic choices that take some of the power away from the story's emotional impact.

Open Roads, the new title from the creators of Gone Home, is a very good and memorable game. Most of its narrative takes place through environmental storytelling, and despite the monotonous gameplay, the game can become a very special and unique experience due to its excellent environment design.

Open Roads presents a captivating story despite its issues. The relationship between Tess and Opal is well developed and there are many moments that makes us reflect, especially for players who have already been in similar family problems. The way the ending is told is less than ideal, as are the multiple dialogue options, that do not have significant impact in the story, but it's definitely an excellent option for those looking for a compelling and creative narrative.

Open Roads offers a moving journey of a mother and her daughter, with a simple but very interesting story. Though it has some annoying details, it's an experience that's definitely worth living for those who love narrative adventures.

Open Roads has a strong emotional core and great performances from its leads, but simplistic gameplay and some clumsy writing hold it back.
