About the story
Frostpunk 2 is the sequel to the highly acclaimed, BAFTA-nominated society survival game that blended city building, strategy and management gameplay, creating a brand new genre. Its successor takes place 30 years after the apocalyptic blizzard storm, and Earth is still overwhelmed by the icy climate of neverending frost and harsh weather. You play as the leader of a resource-hungry metropolis where the expansion and search for new sources of power is an unavoidable reality. After the age of coal, conquering Frostland for the oil extraction industry is expected to be the new salvation of what’s left of humanity. However, change does not come easily, and not everyone in this new multi-layered society will welcome this new direction. Demands and expectations of various factions will raise tensions and evoke conflicts, but will a cold-blooded rule and a Machiavellian approach to politics be necessary? As the everlasting cold continues its grip on the city and outside threats arise, you’ll need to make sure your people are united, driven, and ready for difficult, unavoidable sacrifices!

Frostpunk 2 stands as an ambitious and deep sequel that not only improves on the technical aspects of its predecessor, but reinvents the gameplay experience with new mechanics and more complex dilemmas. The oppressive atmosphere, enhanced by a hair-raising soundtrack and jaw-dropping graphics, creates a world that is as beautiful as it is ruthless. The game especially shines in its ability to intertwine resource management with narrative and ethics .

Frostpunk II has lovely and intimate details, but the big picture is chilly and rigid. The promise of pioneering a new culture becomes yet another tale of survival at all costs.

In the time I played Frostpunk 2, it became my go-to city builder. I love the post-apocalyptic theme, and it is very replayable, but the fact that every single element in the game has some importance to it made me feel like I had to utilize everything at my disposal to really keep my people happy. It is a lot of information at times, and there are some UI elements I would have wanted to see more often, but it is small in the grand scheme and is just such a fun game to play. It is a bit harder to run on the Steam Deck, and the RAM creeping up is a little concerning, but this is still wonderful to play on the Deck. I hope that future patches can help it perform a bit better with gamepad support and lower RAM usage, but I am happy overall!

Frostpunk 2 is an excellent city-builder and simulation experience. The sound, art and graphic design are beautiful. It’s also an intense experience. This intensity can sometimes feel overwhelming, and a touch of humor might have provided a welcome contrast to the relentless bleakness. The risk of too much-simulated suffering is that the most challenging decisions can leave you feeling emotionally detached, as the end often justifies the means. This dynamic makes Frostpunk 2 a unique experience where you can never truly be the ‘good guy,’ only ‘less bad.’ It’s better to play this in short bursts, as it will keep you from becoming emotionally numb to all the suffering in Frostpunk 2.

Frostpunk 2 builds upon the original by throwing everything out and starting over. The stakes are high with Frostpunk 2, and it’s not afraid to kill you. Though you do learn from this in order to retry and do better until you get that “a-ha moment” for the satisfaction of overcoming the odds for success. Unlike the inhabitants of my colonies, we’re eating good with the release of Frostpunk 2, as it’s an excellent survival game that despite its weather, has no chill.
