Violet (2013)

Daniel Linssen, Managore

A 2D platformer where colors can be turned on or off.

About the story

Violet was always shy. She had few male friends growing up, and saw their differences as a divide between them. It became her nature to be cautious and reserved around boys. Eventually, once her teenage years were behind her, she responded to displays of interest with indifference as a way to hide her apprehension. In this way she avoided something she felt she should have learnt years ago, and as time went on it became easier to convince herself that it was now too late to ever bother learning. To this end, Violet set up more and more barriers between herself and anyone who would show interest in her. Eventually she began to actively push people away. Violet led herself to believe that the only way she would find love in her life was if it was destined. If, somehow, fate so ordained that there was one person in all the world meant for her. Someone who would break through each obstacle and each barrier she had put up. Violet was convinced that if such a person existed, then they would persevere. These obstacles and barriers were, after all, a part of her. And could she ever be happy with someone who could not accept her as she was? After countless years, a man such as Violet had always dreamed of arrived. He was perseverant where she was apprehensive, adoring where she was withdrawn, understanding where she was resentful. He had the capacity to overcome their differences. And he would have loved her. But Violet was no longer there.

Violett is a fun point and click game that doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it is a release that will keep you entertained from start to finish.

Violett itself is an enjoyable point and click adventure, but it also has so many glitches and even a game-breaking bug that renders it pointless for purchase on Nintendo Switch. Since the error stems from the touch screen controls, anyone intrigued by this would be better off trying out Violett Remastered on PC to witness its charms without the problems.

It’s clear that the developer has a wonderful vision and creates something that feels it could have achieved a level of wonder seen in its obvious inspiration, Alice in Wonderland. However, there are too many small issues and the lack of any solid narrative makes the game, well, boring.

I wanted to like Violett, but it just required more patience than I was willing to give.

Violett is a fun adventure game that you should play on Nintendo Switch. The graphics alone are worth the purchase alone, since this is a very pretty and vibrant adventure with a great art style. While it doesn't reinvent the wheel, it certainly doesn't need to. It's a bit more linear than what you're probably used to play in this genre, but don't let that get in the way of your enjoyment! It's a short game that doesn't overstay its welcome, so you should set aside an afternoon to dive into the world of Violett!
